I had a chance to get out to the west coast around Monterey, California for a couple of weeks. I would have to say for a photographer, and probably anyone else, this portion of the California coast is amazing! You could literally spend months shooting the area and not run out of places to photograph.
This photograph required two day to capture. I wanted the lens flare but the first evening the ocean spray on my filter ruined the image. The second night I went back to the same location and the waves were much stronger. To the point where I had to stand on the beach and seriously access the risk of getting to the location to take this shot. Not the risk to me as much as the risk to the camera equipment.
My good friend and fellow photographer Chris Crum, from Expressions of America, had lost a camera due to water damage a couple of years ago and I had no desire to do the same. Naturally the urge to get the shot overcame any safety concerns that I may have had and besides I was fairly sure that I had the timing down of the really big waves.
Anyway to make a long story short. Once I was out in position and behind the camera I completely lost all track of time. I was jolted back to reality when a giant wave drenched the left side of my body from head to foot with pretty cold water. Luckily no camera was damaged in the capture of this image and I hope you like the photograph.
